On September 17 and 24, some 20 youth leaders from the Lutheran Church met for a workshop on the use of the Intercultural and Interfaith Manual for ethics education “Learning to Live Together.”
Support from a six member interfaith team from four different religious communities (Bahá’í, Catholic, Lutheran & Muslim) made it possible to share the Manual’s methodology with young Lutherans, who will implement it within their own parishes. The tone for the workshop was set with an explanation about GNRC - Global Network of Religions for Children. Subsequently, different modules from the Manual were shared with the group along with the other elements of this methodology.

As usual, the foundation for the workshop was “learning by doing,” making the activities enjoyable to all, for instance Reach for the Stars, where participants learn about each other joining their commonalities with colored string, as well as recognizing the diversity-enriching differences. Another was What I Stand For, where people are lead to reflect on their own ideas and actively listen to those different from their own; and What Would the World be if… an invitation to imagining a world as we want it: free of weapons, wars, full of respect to our indigenous traditions, where all children have education.
They were also given the opportunity to look into the Manual’s four values, and its conceptual content, learning modules, kiosks, and objectives. Each new element learned and reflection gained went into a Learning Log, a resource to measure the effect of the learning objectives. The camaraderie, laughter and friendship were characteristic of the integration into GNRC of the Lutheran youth, who no doubt will enrich the interfaith experience this network is building to benefit children.
They were invited to continue along these lines at similar events and to join the efforts to construct an interfaith identity in order to overcome prejudice from childhood.
